What is it?
Why do we need to practice for fluency?
The following information was found in the article, Fluency Matters found on the Reading Rockets website.
- A fluent reader does not need to stop and “decode” each word in a text. Most words are read automatically.
The reader focuses more on the story or what the text is telling, therefore increasing comprehension skills.
Fluency is critically important – it is the bridge between decoding words and understanding what has been read.
How can your child practice for fluency?
1. Reread (multiple times) the same passage or page (not a whole book)
2. “Buddy” reading – reading with a partner who models fluent reading first and then has the emerging reader follow. This could be a parent/ guardian or sibling.
3. Recording your child’s voice. What better way for a child to hear how they read!
